And, perhaps most of all, the crusades brought many more Europeans than before into close contact with Muslims and Byzantines. It is no mere coincidence that Arabic was first studied in Europe in the twelfth century or, at the same time, European libraries began to fill up with books that had been long lost to Western scholars, but were now “found” in Muslim and Byzantine libraries and translated into Latin.
